Clearway Energy Group is in the process of developing the Chimney Canyon project in Navajo County, Arizona. Phase 1 of the project includes a 375-megawatt (MW) solar farm, a 375 MW battery energy storage facility, two generation interconnection (gen-tie) transmission lines of about 10 miles each. Eventually, the full project is anticipated to have a total capacity of 765 MW of solar and 765 MW of storage.
By adding solar and energy storage capacity in Navajo County, Chimney Canyon is part of the solution for the growing energy needs in Arizona. This specific facility will help meet the energy demands during the retirement transition from Cholla Coal Power Plant to more sustainable energy production and improve grid reliability.
Clearway is eager to hear feedback from the Navajo County community about the Chimney Canyon project. Email us at chimneycanyonsolar@clearwayenergy.com to get in touch.
Phase 1 of the Chimney Canyon project represents a $1.7 billion investment in Navajo County—funded entirely by private capital. In addition to generating Arizona-grown power, the project will bring revenue and jobs into the wider Navajo County economy.
Clearway has partnered with local families to lease an area of land south of Joseph City. The landowner families will earn reliable income from their solar “crop” for decades while letting the soil rest.
